Report from the Presidents

Greetings EAS Members,

Happy Fall! With the changing seasons this year comes some big changes for the Evolutionary Anthropology Society. As many of you know, we have been having discussions for several years about the future of EAS, and its place within the AAA. This year we will be making a final decision about what our future will look like both within and outside of the American Anthropological Association. These discussions will take place at our annual board and business meetings (details below). The business meeting is open to all members and will be held on Zoom. Please attend if you can.

This year AAA is holding a hybrid meeting, including some events which will take place outside of the traditional meeting week. In particular, our board and business meetings will both be held on November 10th. The business meeting will be held from 6-8pmEST/3-5PST. The Zoom link for the meeting is: https://ucla.zoom.us/j/7274654285

We have many exciting sessions, both in person and virtually, at this year’s meeting in Baltimore. These are listed at the end of this newsletter. If you have not yet registered we encourage you to do so. Discounted rates are available for those who are attending virtually.

For students and postdocs attending the meeting (either in person or virtually), we are hoping to have extra funding this year to help you cover the costs of the meeting. A call will be going out for reimbursements once the meeting has ended, so save your receipts!

Finally, we are still looking for someone to take over for the wonderful Delaney Glass as newsletter editor for EAS. Typically this post is filled by a student, who works closely with the President, President-Elect and Past-President to get out our quarterly newsletters to members. If you are interested, please email me at bscelza@gmail.com with a short statement about your interest.

Sincerely,
Brooke Scelza, EAS President
Karen Kramer, EAS President-Elect
Mary Shenk, EAS Past-President

Report from the Presidents

Greetings EAS Members,

Happy Spring! I hope with the traditional rebirth of spring everyone is also starting to see the burgeoning of a return to normal (or at least semi-normal) post-pandemic life. We are gearing up for the AAA 2021 meeting, which will be held in hybrid form in Baltimore and online this coming November. Since we did not hold sessions at the 2020 virtual meeting, we have offered those who had sessions accepted for that meeting the chance to push them forward to 2021. Since these sessions will fill the allotted slots that our section gets, EAS will not do a separate call for papers this year. However, we encourage our members to put together sessions and submit individual papers. Those papers are still highly likely to be accepted and, as in previous years, EAS will list sessions with our members on its website and promote them via social media. For more details on AAA registration and abstract submission go to: https://annualmeeting.americananthro.org/. Deadline to begin a new submission is May 21, 2021 at 3pm EDT. Please note the time, as the portal will close to new submissions promptly at that time.

As many of you might be aware, recently it was discovered that professors associated with Princeton University and the Penn Museum were using the remains of children killed in the 1985 police bombing of members of the MOVE organization in Philadelphia in an online forensic anthropology course. The use of these children’s remains, without informed consent from their families, violates AAA ethical standards and represents conduct that moves us away from, instead of closer to, the kind of just and equitable anthropology we are striving toward.

The AAA has put out a statement condemning the handling of the remains of the Philadelphia bombing victims, which we fully support. A link to the statement can be found here and a link to a press conference held by the MOVE families is available here. We hope that if you are not already familiar with the details of this incident that you will review these materials. As anthropologists it is our duty to continue to grapple with the ethics and politics of using human remains in our teaching and research, and to condemn their mishandling when it occurs.

Finally, we are looking for someone to take over for the wonderful Delaney Glass as newsletter editor for EAS. Typically this post is filled by a student, who works closely with the President, President-Elect and Past-President to get out our quarterly newsletters to members. If you are interested, please email me at bscelza@gmail.com with a short statement about your interest.

Due to the cancellation of in-person sessions at the 2020 AAA Annual Meeting, EAS has decided to base their awards on paper submissions, in lieu of our typical process of awarding presentations at the meeting. Papers do not have to be based on proposed talks for the 2020 meeting, but should be current work that has not been presented at previous AAA meetings and is currently unpublished. Winners in both categories will have the option to publish their paper at Human Nature (pending peer review) through a special submission process, if their submission has not already been published elsewhere.

Submissions should be sent to bscelza@gmail.com by March 15, 2021. An EAS awards committee will review submissions and winners will be announced in April of 2021.

Eligibility: Papers may be submitted by individuals who held an EAS membership in either 2019-2020 or 2020-2021.

Student Award: individuals who are currently enrolled in either a Masters or PhD program

New Investigator Award: individuals who received their PhD in the last 5 years

Submission Details: The person submitting should be the first author of their paper, and that paper should be currently unpublished. Papers must be no more than 10,000 words (excluding references) with an abstract of 200 words. If you are planning to submit your paper to Human Nature if it wins, please follow the formatting requirements on their website.

Report from the Presidents

Greetings EAS Members,

Normally, our December newsletter would contain a summary of our recent annual meeting, but as you know, this year is not at all like other years. While the AAA did hold a virtual meeting (and I hope some of you were able to attend) EAS did not have sessions. We did, however, hold virtual board and business meetings where we discussed the future of the society, ways to stay connected during COVID, and strategies for improving our membership numbers and engaging more meaningfully with students.

The plan discussed at our meetings was to continue to enact the mandate that was set for us in previous discussions and votes: to set up plans to begin a potential transition from AAA to the AAPA (soon to be AABA). To that end, President-elect Karen Kramer and I will be setting up meeting with the AAPA leadership in the new year to discuss specifics. If there is an in-person meeting in Baltimore we may also try to organize a joint AAPA/EAS event. Stay tuned for details.

Although we were unable to hold EAS sessions this year, we want to continue the tradition of awarding students and new investigators who are doing innovative and exciting work within the evolutionary social sciences. To that end, we will be holding a paper competition for students (in MA or PhD programs) and new investigators (those within 5 years of completing the PhD). Submissions should be sent to bscelza@gmail.com by February 15, 2021. An official call for papers will go out on social media and to our listserv shortly. An EAS awards committee will read and judge the papers, and winners will be announced in the spring newsletter and on our website.

We are also working to increase our presence on social media. If you don’t already follow our Twitter (@evanthsociety ) and Facebook groups, please do. We are working to retweet as many EAS papers and announcements as possible.

I’m sure we are all more than ready to say goodbye to 2020. On that note, see you in 2021!

Brooke Scelza, EAS President
Karen Kramer, EAS President-Elect
Mary Shenk, EAS Past-President

Report from the Presidents

EAS Members,

First and foremost, we hope that this email finds all of you in good health. This has been a challenging few months for all of us, with no end in sight. As such, I imagine EAS news is probably far from your thoughts, but we wanted to mention a few key updates that take us into planning for the next year.

As you all know by now, the 2020 AAA meeting in St. Louis has been canceled. Individual abstracts and sessions that were submitted last spring will automatically be forwarded to next year’s program committee, where the final round of decisions will be made. That means if you submitted an abstract or session proposal for the 2020 meeting, they will automatically repopulate when the call for papers goes out for the 2021 meeting, so you don’t have to resubmit.

While the in-person meeting has been canceled, the AAA will convene in the fall as a virtual event with the theme of Raising Our Voices. This is by design intended to be a new venue given that a live meeting cannot be held until 2021, and is focused on collaboration and conversation rather than presentation style data delivery. There are two types of submissions: Live Stream, which have a limited offering of 160 sessions (4 back-to-back sessions, 4 time slots a day, for 10 days), and View-On-Demand submissions, which include different kinds of venues and will be unlimited. If you are interested in putting together a virtual session or roundtable discussion, the deadline for submission to this new program is August 25th, and you will use the same platform to submit as the regular meeting.

We are particularly interested in hosting sessions that are either focused on (a) topics related to race, equity, justice and representation in the evolutionary social sciences, or (b) topics related to conducting and maintaining research from afar during COVID times.

With the cancellation of most meetings this year, and possibly well into 2021, conversations about potentially moving EAS away from AAA have stalled. If AAPA (soon to be AABA) occurs in 2021 we look forward to having an informal presence there, as we had planned for the LA meeting, and moving forward with discussions on details of a potential move with their executive committee. Right now the call for papers for AAPA is up, with an October 15th deadline.

We hope that all of you stay safe and healthy this summer and wish you the best of luck with whatever transitions lie ahead of you at your universities.

Report from the Presidents

Dear EAS Members,

We hope that you are all managing to find some peace and balance in these challenging times. So much has changed since our last newsletter in February.

The EAS board has met several times to discuss ways that we can respond as a society to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month you should have received an email that EAS signed on to, in conjunction with the Cultural Evolution Society (CES) and the European Human Behavior and Evolution Association (EHBEA). In that email we called for our members to think about ways that they could engage with the communities they work with, in conjunction with local and national entities where possible, to pass on information about the pandemic and how to prevent transmission of the disease. We appreciate that our members may be variably comfortable with taking on such work. Some may have pre-established relationships with public health organizations or government ministries and can work through them. Others of us may not have these collaborations in place, but might use this situation as an opportunity to think about building such links. We are not advocating any particular strategy, just encouraging our members to think about these issues as they pertain to the communities they work with.

A second focus of our meetings was to discuss the ways in which COVID-related restrictions are impacting our research and scholarship, particularly for students, post-docs and junior scholars who may have been displaced from pursuing or continuing their field work, or do not have long-term datasets to draw upon to continue their research. In order to think about ways to lessen the impact of these disruptions, we are planning a Zoom meeting for interested parties to share suggestions and strategize ways that we as a society can help to bring parties together and facilitate collaborative relationships. Therefore, we encourage both junior and senior colleagues to attend. If you are interested, please RSVP to me (Brooke) by responding to this email and we will send you a link to the Zoom meeting (planned for sometime in late May).

Finally, we discussed how conference cancellations have impacted our plans for the future of EAS. Our previous plan was to have an EAS sponsored event at the AAPA meetings in Los Angeles last month. The goal of this gathering was to bring together current EAS members who attend HBA/AAPA and to draw in potential new members and hear their thoughts (informally) about EAS joining them. Given the cancellation of AAPA, our next opportunity to get together as a group will be at the AAA meetings in St. Louis. We had a number of exciting talks submitted and look forward to a full slate of EAS sessions this year. Between now and then, we will continue to reach out to officers at AAPA to gain a fuller understanding of what an EAS/AAPA hybrid could look like and will report on these meetings at our business meeting in the fall.

Speaking of AAA, if you have not yet submitted your abstract, the deadline to do so has been extended to May 15th. If you did not submit an abstract to EAS you can still submit your abstract directly to AAA and mark EAS as the section you would like to review it. We encourage you to submit abstracts in the next two weeks, and we look forward to seeing you all in St. Louis (hopefully in person!).

Sincerely,

Brooke Scelza (President)

Report from the Presidents

Dear EAS Members,

We hope that you all enjoyed the AAA/CAA meeting in Vancouver as much as we did. We had another round of stimulating EAS sessions and an exciting business meeting (secret votes!) discussing the future of EAS (more on that below).

We’d like to start by announcing the winners of the EAS New Investigator and Student awards at the conference. Co-winners for the student award were Adam Reynolds (University of New Mexico) and Curtis Atkisson (UC Davis), and co-winners for the New Investigator prize were Katie Starkweather (University of New Mexico) and Melanie Martin (University of Washington). Congratulations!

Our new board is now in place with Karen Kramer beginning her role as President-Elect, Alyssa Crittenden and Jeremy Koster joining as members-at-large, and Adam Reynolds as the new student rep. We have also appointed Drew Gerkey to serve as Treasurer, taking over for Dawn Neill. Thanks to Dawn for her many years of service. Newsletter editors Melanie Martin and Katie Starkweather are also stepping down and we are looking for some interested parties to take over. This is a great chance for one or two senior graduate students or early-career people to take on a more active role in EAS. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact us.

Finally, the focus of our board and business meetings this year was once again on the future of EAS. Following a series of meetings that Mary and Brooke had with presidents and other representatives at AAPA, HBA, HBES and AAA, we presented a slate of options to the board for discussion. Upon careful consideration, the board proposed a hybrid model that would allow us to pilot a move to either AAPA (soon AABA) or HBA, while still maintaining our presence at AAA until a final decision is made. At the business meeting, straw polls were held that endorsed this hybrid model and pointed to AAPA as the primary organization to work with on piloting a move. We will now move forward with setting this plan into action, with more details forthcoming over the next year. Here are the first two things to keep on your radar, however: First, EAS will be meeting as usual at the AAA meetings in St. Louis in November 2020, so get ready to submit your abstracts and session proposals in March/April. Second, in an effort to kick off this new era in EAS’s history we will be hosting an informal event for current and potential future EAS members at the AAPA/HBA meetings in Los Angeles in April 2020, so stay tuned for details in upcoming newsletters.

Sincerely,

Brooke Scelza (President)
Karen Kramer (President-Elect)
